Landsat 9 Spectral Specifications

Details about the OLI-2 and TIRS-2 spectral bands

Landsat 9 launched on September 27, 2021. It’s a replication of Landsat 8. Landsat 9 is a 14-bit radiometric resolution while. Landsat 8 id s 12-bit radiometric resolution. Landsat 9 carries two science instruments :

  • The Operational Land Imager 2 – OLI-2
  • The Thermal Infrared Sensor 2 – TIRS-2

The OLI-2 instrument captures observations of the planet in three bands spectral bands : visible (Blue, Red and Green), Near InfraRed (NIR) and ShortWave-InfraRed (SWIR) light while the The Thermal Infrared Sensor 2 – TIRS-2 measures thermal infrared radiation, or heat (brightness temperature), of Earth’s surfaces.
Going back to Landsat 7 and Landsat 8, many things have changed with Landsat 9 in terms of spectral bands specifications. The figures below highlighted majors differences.
